    In 1777, the Cherokee Indian Territory became Pickens County. Andrew Pickens came in and helped oversee its transition to Pendleton District before it was divided by General Edmund Ruffin’s Act of February 25th 1826 into two counties: Pickens and Anderson district. A portion of Pickens County was later split off to form Oconee County in 1868. Sawmills, gristmills, and a few shops producing were the extent of the area’s industry at that time; however when Cateechee welcomed its first modern cotton mill in 1895 things changed for this small town forever as it quickly became one of America’s major textile producers with their county seat being located within neighboring Pickens.
