History Of Greenville, South Carolina

Greenville, South Carolina was originally called Pleasantburg before its name changed in 1831. The city is located on the Tar River and at a fork of Interstate 85 (I-85) and US 29/278 which connect it with Charlotte to the northwest or Atlanta to the southeast. Greenville County was created from Spartanburg District in 1786 but was renamed as Greenville District until 1868 during when time General Nathanael Greene may have been named after by locals due his American Revolutionary involvement..
